Tips about shop, store and prepare Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

Vibrant Produce: Fresh fruits and vegetables provide vitamins, minerals and fibers to help keep our body healthy. Sometimes they become contaminated with harmful bacteria like E. Coli, Salmonella. If eaten, these contaminated vegetables or fruits can cause foodborne illness which include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea headaches and fever.

So the question arises how can we keep fresh fruits and vegetables safe to eat.

Grocery shopping: Prepare the list of items to buy at home to save time in store.

For pre-cut fresh fruits and vegetables, buy only those which are refrigerated or surrounded by ice.

Avoid the damaged, open or torn packages.

In the cart, keep fresh fruits and vegetables separate from raw meat.

At checkout , bag raw meat separately from fresh fruits and vegetables.

Keep fresh produce separate from household chemicals in the shopping cart and grocery bags

Grocery Storing:  Once you bring the grocery at home from the supermarket, it is important you store it properly at room temperature or refrigerator to prevent the spoiling of the produce

At room temperature: To store fruits and vegetables at room temperature.

Do not wash before storing but wash them before eating. If the produce is dirty, rinse and dry them well before storing.

Keep storage area clean and pest free.

Keep them in cool dry dark place.

Keep fresh fruits and vegetables away from household cleaning products.

Check stored fruits and vegetables often. Throw away those which show the sign of spoilage.

In the refrigerator: Pre-Cut fruits and vegetables bought at the supermarket must be stored in the refrigerator immediately.

Store the fresh fruits and vegetable in the produce drawer of the refrigerator.

Cover cut fruits and vegetables tightly with plastic wrap.

Keep them separate from raw meat. Place raw meat at the bottom of the shelf of the refrigerator in a tray or pan.

Keep the temperature of your refrigerator below 40 degree F.

Clean the refrigerator as needed and throw the spoiled food. Wipe the spills with hot, soapy water.

Food preparation:
While cooking, keep your hands, your cooking utensils, and cooking area and produce clean

Wash your hands with hot soapy water for 20 seconds before and after handling food.

Wash your utensils, counter tops and cutting board with hot soapy water. You can sanitize them ( which have been in contact with raw meat ) with mixture of 1 teaspoon chlorine bleach in 1 quart of water.

Wash whole fruits and vegetables before preparing them even if the skin or rind will not be eaten.

Do not use detergent, soaps or bleach to wash produce.

For firm fruits and vegetables, scrub them with a clean brush.

For softer fruits and vegetables, gently rub them with hands.

Keep the cutting tray for meat and vegetables separate.

Remember: Buy good quality fresh fruits and vegetables, store them properly and wash them thoroughly.
